Summer School Tutor

The distinguished musician D’Arcy Trinkwon is internationally acclaimed as one of the commanding and original talents of his generation. A fearless and uncompromising champion of the organ as a first-class concert instrument, he has forged a singular career and remains one of the few to establish himself solely as a concert organist, without association with a cathedral, university, college or other prominent musical institution.

Far more than the ‘astonishing’, ‘awesome’, ‘incredible’ and ‘remarkable’ performer celebrated for ‘jaw-dropping virtuosity’, as the critics and public so frequently hail him, he is above all a formidable musician whose sole purpose is to liberate the music he plays from technical limitation, allowing it a freedom that only exceptional artistic and technical accomplishment can allow it.

“Trinkwon earned enthusiastic applause for his technically immaculate playing and his great virtuosity. His splendid, but nevertheless subtle virtuosity combined with considerable artistic integrity to demonstrate that he is one of the really great artists of his genre.”

With more than 1,500 performances at international festivals and major concert series across the world, Trinkwon has appeared in concert halls, cathedrals and churches – equally at home on historic and modern instruments.

He has also given many solo concert series, as well as appearing as a concerto soloist (most recently with the Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata and Hove Symphony), broadcaster, recording artist, writer and teacher. Since 2015, he has served as Organist to the University of Sussex, where he presents a monthly recital series in the university’s Meeting House.

“So much infectious joy radiates from his performance that purists could suffer severe pangs of guilt… Technical difficulties don’t exist.”
Organists Review

Well known for his unlimited repertoire – one of the broadest of any artist before the public – which encompasses the instrument’s masterpieces across four centuries, he moves freely between the various schools and periods with equal command – from spiritual stillness to volcanic intensity. In addition to all the standard classics, he has also given numerous first performances – including the UK premieres of Messiaen’s Prélude, Vasks’ Te Deum, Demessieux’s Six Études and Répons pour les temps liturgiques, and many works by Karl Mørk Karlsen, among others.

His interpretations may be grounded in rigorous scholarship, yet they are animated by an instinctive affinity with both music and instrument, fired by a passionate desire to reveal the beauty of music to others.

“The supremely gifted organ virtuoso D’Arcy Trinkwon. His subtle yet magisterial command of the instrument was spell-binding: he knows no technical difficulties and his playing was in total accord.”
The Organ

His groundbreaking YouTube channel, Virtuoso Organ Music, contains more than 350 archive recordings, forming one of the most comprehensive libraries of organ repertoire available online. More than an archive, it offers a direct insight into the musical world of a performer who inhabits every work from within.

“We were flabbergasted by the power of D’Arcy Trinkwon – who played with stunning technique but at the same time demonstrated how deeply he feels the music and can express its hidden messages.” Olomoucka Vychovatelska (CZ.)

Although he demonstrated prodigious talent for the graphic arts from an early age, it was as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral that D’Arcy realised his musical vocation, becoming fascinated by the organ at the age of 11. An accomplished pianist, his development as an organist was shaped by his distinguished teachers Allam Wicks, H. A. and Jennifer Bate, Jane Parker-Smith, Jean Guillou and Odile Pierre.

“The aristocratic Trinkwon fascinated his audience with his eminent performance: many sat with their heads bowed, transported by the music… Trinkwon proved to those not acquainted with organ music that there is a world of difference between funeral music and a concert by a world-class artist. Unusually, there were also many young people in the audience.” Laagensdalposten (N.)

In 2015, he accepted an invitation to become Director of Music at St John the Baptist, Penhurst, near his home in rural Kent – a position made possible by the vision of a private sponsor.
