Alexander Hamilton has been Director of Music at His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, and Director of the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy since September 2025. At Hampton Court, he directs the Chapel Choir and is spearheading the development of a new girl chorister programme, enabling girls to sing in the Chapel for the first time in its 500-year history.
The winner of First Prize at the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition in 2015, Alexander held organ scholarships at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle; Trinity College, Cambridge; and Westminster Abbey. In September 2020, Alexander moved to Wells Cathedral as Assistant Director of Music, latterly serving as Acting Director of Music. During this time, he was also Artistic Director of Cathedral Commissions, commissioning new works from composers including Grayston Ives, Joanna Marsh, Matthew Martin, and Lucy Walker. Alexander was Music Director of the Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society, through which he worked with the English Symphony Orchestra, Southern Sinfonia, Music for Awhile, and Réjouissance, directing major works including Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Bach’s St John Passion. He appears as conductor, organ soloist, and accompanist on several critically-acclaimed recordings, including several on Hyperion. His most recent recording, Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols with the Choristers of Wells Cathedral, is available to view on YouTube.
Until July 2025, Alexander was Director of Music at Westminster Cathedral Choir School. He remains in demand as an organ teacher, having been principal organ teacher at Wells Cathedral School and a regular tutor on courses for Creative Oundle for Organists. He is a member of the Cathedral Music Trust’s Programmes Committee and also serves on the Trust’s Grant Assessment Panel.
